The history of the Hanoi Old Quarter

The Hanoi Old Quarter traces its origins back to the 11th century, during the Ly Dynasty, when Thang Long (present-day Hanoi) became the capital of Vietnam. The area grew as a hub for trade and craftsmanship, eventually forming what was known as the “36 guild streets.” Each street was named after the type of goods or services sold there, such as Hang Bac (silver), Hang Dao (silk), and Hang Ma (paper offerings).

Throughout the centuries, especially during the Le and Nguyen Dynasties, the area developed further as artisans and merchants from across the country migrated here. They established their own craft guilds and community temples, shaping the urban fabric that still exists today.Today, the quarter is one of the few places in Hanoi where traces of different historical periods co-exist in daily life. Walking through its alleys gives a sense of the commercial and social rhythms that have defined this part of the city for centuries.

We just had a northern Vietnam tour with Hanoi Voyages, touring Van Ho, Pu Luong, Ninh Binh, we had a superb time. Sophie c/o with Hanoi Voyages was so helpful, gave us so many valuable advice and make sure everything goes smoothly from the beginning of the planning till we return to our home country. The driver Mr Dong, the guide Mr Quach Tan (also guide from minority village) are amazing. We cant wait to visit Vietnam again with them.

I wanted to travel to Halong Bay, Vietnam and the major attractions in Thailand and looked to find a competent travel agency to plan and execute the trip. Hanoi voyages was what my top choice from my research. End to end they customized my trip based on my unique requirements and helped with travel, tourist guides and accommodations. The hotels were really good in each of the four cities I stayed in and the guides took care of me extremely well. The trip went off without a glitch, thanks to Hanoi voyages. I would strongly recommend them for anyone from the US traveling to Vietnam and Thailand.
