Transportation in Cambodia: Everything you need to know

Cambodia is a country of wonderful landscapes, ancient wonders, and lively cities but to truly experience it all, you need to know how to get around. From remorks and motorbike taxis to buses and domestic flights, this guide covers everything you need to know about transportation in Cambodia. Don’t worry! Hanoi Voyages is here to travel with you every step of the way.

Exploring transportation in Cambodia: How to get around the cities easily

Public transportation in Cambodia is still underdeveloped compared to neighboring countries, but there are many ways to navigate the cities. Here are the most common transportation:

Remork

Remork - A unique means of transportation in Cambodia

The remork, commonly known as a tuk-tuk, is the most popular and convenient mode of transportation in Cambodia. These three-wheeled motorized vehicles have an open-air design, making them perfect for enjoying the sights and sounds of the city while getting around. Tuk-tuks are widely used by both locals and tourists, especially in cities like Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Sihanoukville. They are ideal for short trips within the city, rides to tourist attractions, or even longer journeys between towns. Most remork drivers do not use meters, so fares are typically negotiated before the ride. Prices depend on factors such as the distance, time of day, and your bargaining skills.

📌 Fares: $1–$5 for short rides, up to $10+ for longer distances.

Cyclo (Rickshaw)

For a more nostalgic and traditional way to experience Cambodia, the cyclo (pedal-powered rickshaw) is an excellent option. Unlike the motorized remork, cyclos are powered by human effort, with the driver pedaling from behind while the passenger sits comfortably in the front. This mode of transport was once a common way for locals to travel around cities, but today, it is primarily used by tourists who want to take a slow and scenic ride through historic areas.

Cyclos are most commonly found in Phnom Penh, particularly near tourist attractions like the Royal Palace, the riverside, and the Central Market. Riding a cyclo is not only a relaxing way to explore the city but also a meaningful way to support the local drivers, many of whom have been working in this profession for decades. Prices are negotiable, and it’s always a good idea to agree on the fare before starting your journey.

📌 Fares: $2–$5 per short trip (negotiable).

Motorbike taxis (Moto-dop)

If you’re looking for a fast and affordable way to get around, motorbike taxis, commonly known as moto-dops, are a great option. These are especially useful for navigating through traffic-congested areas where larger vehicles, such as cars and remorks, might struggle to move efficiently. Moto-dops are commonly found on street corners, near markets, and at major intersections in cities across Cambodia.

This mode of transportation is ideal for solo travelers or those taking short-distance trips. However, moto-dops come with some safety concerns, as not all drivers provide helmets for passengers. It’s highly recommended to request a helmet before starting your ride and to hold on securely for a safe journey. Since moto-dops do not have meters, it’s crucial to negotiate the price before hopping on.

📌 Fares: $1–$3 depending on the distance.

Ride-hailing

In recent years, ride-hailing services in Cambodia have become an essential part of urban mobility. As public transportation in Cambodia is still limited, ride-hailing apps like Grab, PassApp, and Tada offer a hassle-free way for travelers and locals to get around.

These services provide transparent pricing, eliminating the need for fare negotiation, which is a common issue with street taxis and tuk-tuks. Available in major cities like Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Sihanoukville, ride-hailing apps allow users to book tuk-tuks, motorbikes, or private cars through their smartphones, ensuring safety, convenience, and accessibility

How to travel between provinces in Cambodia: A complete guide

Cambodia provides a variety of intercity travel options, accommodating different budgets, travel styles, and levels of comfort. Whether you prefer budget-friendly buses, convenient domestic flights, or a scenic train journey, there are numerous ways to explore the country’s diverse landscapes and cities.

Intercity buses

Buses are the most common and affordable mode of transportation for long-distance travel in Cambodia. They operate frequently and connect major cities with relatively low fares. Most buses come with air conditioning, reclining seats, and sometimes onboard Wi-Fi, making them a comfortable option for budget travelers.

Popular bus routes and travel durations:

  • Phnom Penh → Siem Reap: 5–6 hours
  • Phnom Penh → Sihanoukville: 4–5 hours
  • Phnom Penh → Battambang: 5–6 hours
  • Siem Reap → Sihanoukville: 10–12 hours

While buses remain the most affordable option, road conditions can be rough, particularly on routes to Sihanoukville. Booking in advance, especially for VIP or sleeper buses, is recommended, as these offer a more comfortable travel experience compared to standard buses.

📌 Fares: Standard buses cost $8–$12 per ticket, while VIP and sleeper buses range from $12–$18.

Train

While public transportation in Cambodia is still developing, trains provide a unique option for those who want to avoid rough roads and heavy traffic. The network connects major cities such as Phnom Penh, Sihanoukville, Battambang, and Poipet, making it an alternative to intercity buses for long-distance travel.

Although trains are slower than buses, they offer spacious seating, reclining seats, air conditioning, and beautiful countryside views. The most commonly used train route in Cambodia is the Phnom Penh – Sihanoukville line. This is a great option for travelers heading to the beach while avoiding Cambodia’s traffic congestion.

Main train routes and travel durations:

  • Phnom Penh → Sihanoukville: 6–7 hours
  • Phnom Penh → Battambang: 7–8 hours

One of the main drawbacks of train travel in Cambodia is the limited schedule, as trains operate only a few times per week. Travelers should check departure times in advance and plan accordingly. Ticket prices are affordable, making them a budget-friendly alternative to other modes of transportation in Cambodia.

📌 Fares: Economy class tickets range from $6–$10, while first-class or VIP tickets cost $10–$15, depending on the route

Domestic flights

Cambodia airway

Domestic flights in Cambodia provide the quickest way to travel between major cities. Key airports include Phnom Penh International Airport, Siem Reap International Airport, and Sihanoukville International Airport, with airlines like Cambodia Angkor Air, Cambodia Airways, and Lanmei Airlines operating regular flights. Popular routes such as Phnom Penh to Siem Reap and Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville significantly reduce travel time compared to buses or trains.

Popular domestic flight routes and durations:

  • Phnom Penh → Siem Reap: 45 minutes
  • Phnom Penh → Sihanoukville: 40 minutes
  • Siem Reap → Sihanoukville: 1 hour

While flying significantly reduces travel time, it is also the most expensive option compared to buses or trains. Booking in advance can help secure lower fares.

📌 Fares: Ticket prices vary but typically range from $50–$120 per one-way flight, depending on the airline and booking time.

Boat and ferry services

Tonle Sap
Take a boat or ferry in Tonle Sap lake

For a different travel experience, boat and ferry services in Cambodia offer scenic routes along rivers and to the country’s islands. The Phnom Penh to Siem Reap boat trip via the Tonle Sap lake takes around 5–8 hours and offers stunning views of floating villages. However, this route is seasonal and operates best during the rainy season (June–November) when water levels are high. Checking weather conditions before booking a boat trip is essential, as rough seas or low water levels can affect schedules.

Travel tips for easy transportation in Cambodia

To make your Cambodia trip as smooth and unforgettable as possible, Hanoi Voyages gives some useful travel tips to help you get ready for your holiday.

Book in advance for long-distance travel

For intercity transportation in Cambodia, especially on popular routes like Phnom Penh to Siem Reap or Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville, booking in advance is highly recommended.

VIP services, sleeper buses, and domestic flights can sell out quickly during peak seasons. Using online platforms like Camboticket and BookMeBus allows travelers to compare schedules, prices, and book tickets conveniently.

If you’re planning to take a train, checking the Royal Railway Cambodia schedule in advance is crucial, as train services operate on limited days.

Use ride-hailing apps for convenience

To avoid overpaying, use ride-hailing apps like Grab, PassApp, and Tada, which offer fixed fares and safer travel. These apps allow you to book tuk-tuks, cars, or motorbike taxis with transparent pricing and the option for cashless payments. Ride-hailing services are widely available in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Sihanoukville, making them the easiest way to get around without worrying about negotiating fares.

Stay safe and keep valuables secure

Whether you’re taking a bus, remork, or ferry, always keep your belongings secure. Pickpocketing can happen in crowded areas, such as bus stations and markets. When taking remorks or motorbike taxis, hold onto your bags tightly and avoid using your phone when using transportation to prevent snatching incidents.

Exploring Cambodia is an exciting journey, and with the right transportation, it can be both smooth and unforgettable. Let Hanoi Voyages take care of all the details! Contact us today to start planning your special journey!

We just had a northern Vietnam tour with Hanoi Voyages, touring Van Ho, Pu Luong, Ninh Binh, we had a superb time. Sophie c/o with Hanoi Voyages was so helpful, gave us so many valuable advice and make sure everything goes smoothly from the beginning of the planning till we return to our home country. The driver Mr Dong, the guide Mr Quach Tan (also guide from minority village) are amazing. We cant wait to visit Vietnam again with them.

I wanted to travel to Halong Bay, Vietnam and the major attractions in Thailand and looked to find a competent travel agency to plan and execute the trip. Hanoi voyages was what my top choice from my research. End to end they customized my trip based on my unique requirements and helped with travel, tourist guides and accommodations. The hotels were really good in each of the four cities I stayed in and the guides took care of me extremely well. The trip went off without a glitch, thanks to Hanoi voyages. I would strongly recommend them for anyone from the US traveling to Vietnam and Thailand.
