Thailand-Cambodia travel budget overview: What you’ll spend

A Thailand and Cambodia trip can be surprisingly affordable, whether you’re traveling on a tight budget or seeking a mid-range or luxury experience. Cambodia is often more budget-friendly, while Thailand offers greater variety in hotels, transport and tours.

In this section, we break down the average costs for key travel categories—helping you plan your Thailand and Cambodia travel budget with clarity and ease.

Transportation costs

Getting around Thailand and Cambodia is relatively easy and affordable, with a wide range of options for every budget. Whether you’re traveling between countries or navigating within cities, efficient transport helps maximize your time and comfort without straining your wallet.

Budgeting for traveling between two countries

For most travelers, moving between Thailand and Cambodia is quick and straightforward, with short-haul flights being the most convenient option. Budget airlines operate frequent routes between major cities like Bangkok, Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, with fares typically ranging from $40 to $140, depending on the season and how early you book. This method saves time and ensures a smooth border crossing experience.

Budgeting for traveling around two countries

Once inside Thailand or Cambodia, navigating cities and regions is simple and budget-friendly. Depending on your preference for comfort, speed, or adventure, you’ll find plenty of ways to get around:

  • Tuk-tuks and local taxis: A fun and local way to explore urban areas. Fares range from $2 to $10 depending on distance. Always agree on the price beforehand, especially in tourist zones.
  • Grab (ride-hailing app): Widely available in major cities like Bangkok, Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. Offers transparent pricing—typically $3–$8 per ride—and greater comfort, especially for longer distances.
  • Domestic flights: Ideal for long-distance travel within each country (e.g., Bangkok to Krabi or Phnom Penh to Siem Reap). Prices range from $35 to $100 when flying with budget airlines like AirAsia or Cambodia Angkor Air.
  • Motorbike rental: A popular option for experienced travelers in smaller towns or islands. Expect to pay $6–$10/day, plus fuel. Always wear a helmet and ensure you have valid travel insurance.

We just had a northern Vietnam tour with Hanoi Voyages, touring Van Ho, Pu Luong, Ninh Binh, we had a superb time. Sophie c/o with Hanoi Voyages was so helpful, gave us so many valuable advice and make sure everything goes smoothly from the beginning of the planning till we return to our home country. The driver Mr Dong, the guide Mr Quach Tan (also guide from minority village) are amazing. We cant wait to visit Vietnam again with them.

I wanted to travel to Halong Bay, Vietnam and the major attractions in Thailand and looked to find a competent travel agency to plan and execute the trip. Hanoi voyages was what my top choice from my research. End to end they customized my trip based on my unique requirements and helped with travel, tourist guides and accommodations. The hotels were really good in each of the four cities I stayed in and the guides took care of me extremely well. The trip went off without a glitch, thanks to Hanoi voyages. I would strongly recommend them for anyone from the US traveling to Vietnam and Thailand.
