Family trip to Thailand cost: A complete guide

A trip to Thailand with the whole family can be both exciting and affordable – if you plan ahead. This complete guide will walk you through everything you need to know about your Thailand family vacation budget, helping you estimate and manage costs with ease.

Thailand travel: Budgeting for transportation

Getting around Thailand is convenient, but transportation costs can add up quickly – especially when traveling with kids. To better manage your Thailand trip cost for family, it’s important to understand the options and average prices for local and long-distance travel.

International flights

Airfare is one of the biggest factors in your family trip to Thailand cost, especially if you’re flying from long-haul destinations. Prices can vary widely depending on the season, booking time and departure city.

  • From the US and Canada: average round-trip fare about $1,000 – $1,500 per person

  • From Southeast Asia: average round-trip fare about $50 – $200 per person

Tip: Booking early and traveling during shoulder seasons (April–June or September – November) can significantly reduce your total airfare.

Local transportation

When calculating your Thailand trip cost for family, don’t overlook local transportation. Getting around in Thailand is generally affordable and convenient, with many family-friendly options depending on where you’re traveling.

Getting around cities

Tuk-tuks Essential tips for your first holiday in Thailand
Tuk-tuks
  • Tuk Tuk: Fun and iconic, but often more expensive than taxis. Short rides can cost $3 – $8, so agree on the price in advance.

  • Metered Taxi: Widely available in cities like Bangkok and Chiang Mai. Starting fare is around $1, then about $0.30 per additional kilometer..

  • Grab (ride-hailing app): Safe, convenient and often cheaper for families than tuk tuks. Offers fare estimates and avoids haggling.

  • BTS/MRT (Bangkok only): Clean and reliable. Fares range from $0.5 – $2 per person per ride. Great for avoiding traffic.

Intercity transportation

Thailand train from Chiang Mai to Bangkok
Trains – Comfortable and scenic for longer routes
  • Domestic flights: Ideal for long distances (e.g., Bangkok to Chiang Mai or Phuket). Budget airlines offer tickets from $20 – $100 /person if booked early.

  • Trains: Comfortable and scenic for longer routes. Sleeper trains are a fun experience for kids. Prices vary from $15 – $45.

  • Buses & minivans: Budget-friendly but can be less comfortable for children on long rides. Average fare $15 – $35 depending on distance.

Local transportation cost for a family (Daily estimate)

  • Budget travel: $20 – $40/day

  • Mid-range (using Grab, taxis, some flights): $30 – $50/day

  • Luxury (private car with driver): $60 – $100/day

Tip: Using a mix of local transport and apps like Grab helps keep your Thailand family vacation budget under control while ensuring comfort for kids.

Accommodation costs for families in Thailand

Thailand offers a wide range of family-friendly places to stay – from affordable guesthouses to luxurious beach resorts – making it easy to tailor your Thailand family trip itinerary to your needs and wallet.

Whether you’re traveling with young kids or teens, you’ll find plenty of options that cater to families:

  • Family suites or connecting rooms in hotels

  • Resorts with kid-friendly pools and kids’ clubs

  • Homestays and serviced apartments with kitchenettes for meal prep

  • Beachfront bungalows in quieter areas for relaxation

  • Eco-lodges in the north for nature-loving families

Most mid-range and high-end hotels in tourist cities like Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket and Krabi offer amenities such as extra beds, baby cots, kids’ menus and even free stays for children under 6–12 years old (sharing bed with parents).

Estimated price ranges (per night for a family of 4):

  • Budget hotels and boutique stays: starting at $80 per night

  • Mid-range resorts and 4-star hotels: starting at $120 per night

  • Luxury villas and high-end resorts: about $250 – $500 per night

NOTE: Depending on where you stay and the level of comfort you choose, the Thailand trip cost for family can vary significantly.

Other expenses for traveling to Thailand with family

Beyond flights, hotels, meals and activities, there are several smaller but important costs that families should factor into their Thailand family vacation budget. These extra expenses may seem minor at first, but they can add up quickly – especially for a family.

SIM card & internet access

  • Price: $30–$100 per person for a 1–2 week trip (varies by provider and coverage)

Souvenirs & small shopping

  • Expect to spend on clothes, local snacks, toys, or handmade crafts at night markets or tourist shops.

  • Estimated budget: Depending on your shopping habits.

Things to notice when spending money in Thailand

A Thailand holiday seems to be affordable for most families and it is easy to find everything you need. However, when buying something or using services in Thailand, there are still cautions that you should keep in mind to make your trip as comfortable as possible.

Currency and exchange rates

Thailand uses the Thai Baht (THB) and understanding the exchange rate is an important step in planning your family trip to Thailand cost. In Thailand, cash is still king, so make sure to have enough THB on hand to pay for things like food, transportation and small purchases.

You’ll get better exchange rates at banks or reputable exchange counters than at airports. ATMs are widely available in major cities and tourist areas, but make sure to check if there are any additional fees for foreign transactions.

Bargaining at markets

Bargaining is part of Thai shopping culture – especially in local markets, souvenir stalls and night bazaars. Don’t hesitate to negotiate, but always do so politely and with a smile. Fixed-price stores or chain shops won’t allow bargaining.

While shopping can be a fun part of your Thailand family trip itinerary, it’s also an area where costs can add up quickly. Set a spending limit for souvenirs and teach kids how to spot fair prices.

Tipping culture

Tipping in Thailand is not required, but it’s appreciated – especially for good service. At local restaurants, rounding up the bill or leaving 20–50 THB is common. For hotel staff, porters, or tour guides, a tip of 50–100 THB is a nice gesture.

Tipping won’t drastically affect your Thailand family vacation budget, but including it in your overall planning ensures smoother service and more positive local interactions throughout your Thailand family trip itinerary.

Local prices and tourist prices

Thailand has a noticeable gap between local and tourist pricing in certain places. Street food, public transportation and local restaurants are extremely affordable for everyone. However, some attractions or private transport options may charge tourists higher fees.

To keep your family trip to Thailand cost balanced, aim to mix popular sights with free or low-cost local experiences, such as temple visits, public parks and local food markets. Booking activities in advance and researching prices can help you avoid inflated tourist rates.

Planning your Thailand family vacation budget wisely ensures a smoother, more enjoyable experience for the whole family – without the stress of overspending. By understanding typical costs for transportation, accommodation, food and activities, you can create a trip that’s both memorable and affordable.

We just had a northern Vietnam tour with Hanoi Voyages, touring Van Ho, Pu Luong, Ninh Binh, we had a superb time. Sophie c/o with Hanoi Voyages was so helpful, gave us so many valuable advice and make sure everything goes smoothly from the beginning of the planning till we return to our home country. The driver Mr Dong, the guide Mr Quach Tan (also guide from minority village) are amazing. We cant wait to visit Vietnam again with them.

I wanted to travel to Halong Bay, Vietnam and the major attractions in Thailand and looked to find a competent travel agency to plan and execute the trip. Hanoi voyages was what my top choice from my research. End to end they customized my trip based on my unique requirements and helped with travel, tourist guides and accommodations. The hotels were really good in each of the four cities I stayed in and the guides took care of me extremely well. The trip went off without a glitch, thanks to Hanoi voyages. I would strongly recommend them for anyone from the US traveling to Vietnam and Thailand.
