Travel tips when visiting Chiang Rai

To help you make the most of your journey through the must-see destinations in Chiang Rai, these practical tips will keep your experience smooth, immersive, and meaningful.

Choose the best time to visit

The ideal time to explore Chiang Rai is between November and February, when the weather is cool and dry. During these months, you can enjoy outdoor activities like visiting mountain temples, exploring tea plantations, and walking around the night markets without the heat and humidity. This is also festival season, giving you a chance to witness traditional celebrations and vibrant local life.

Dress respectfully at temples

Many of the must-see destinations in Chiang Rai are sacred sites, such as the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) and the Blue Temple (Wat Rong Suea Ten). When visiting these places, wear modest clothing: covered shoulders, no short shorts or skirts, and remove your shoes before entering the temple grounds. Respectful attire shows appreciation for Thai culture and allows you to blend in more comfortably with local visitors.

Get around Chiang Rai

Renting a motorbike is a popular and budget-friendly option for confident drivers, but ensure you’re certified and insured. If you prefer comfort, consider hiring a private car with a local driver—especially if you’re planning to visit Doi Tung, the Golden Triangle, or tribal villages.

Book accommodation in advance

If you’re planning to visit during the cool season or around major Thai holidays, it’s wise to book your accommodation early. Many travelers flock to explore the must-see destinations in Chiang Rai, and boutique hotels, eco-lodges and homestays can fill up quickly, especially those near attractions. Booking in advance ensures you’ll have a comfortable base from which to enjoy all the things to do in Chiang Rai without stress.

Chiang Rai offers an unforgettable blend of spiritual beauty, cultural depth, and serene landscapes. Exploring the must-see destinations in Chiang Rai allows you to feel a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity, along with unforgettable moments of tranquility.

We just had a northern Vietnam tour with Hanoi Voyages, touring Van Ho, Pu Luong, Ninh Binh, we had a superb time. Sophie c/o with Hanoi Voyages was so helpful, gave us so many valuable advice and make sure everything goes smoothly from the beginning of the planning till we return to our home country. The driver Mr Dong, the guide Mr Quach Tan (also guide from minority village) are amazing. We cant wait to visit Vietnam again with them.

I wanted to travel to Halong Bay, Vietnam and the major attractions in Thailand and looked to find a competent travel agency to plan and execute the trip. Hanoi voyages was what my top choice from my research. End to end they customized my trip based on my unique requirements and helped with travel, tourist guides and accommodations. The hotels were really good in each of the four cities I stayed in and the guides took care of me extremely well. The trip went off without a glitch, thanks to Hanoi voyages. I would strongly recommend them for anyone from the US traveling to Vietnam and Thailand.
