A 10-day journey across Vietnam promises a rich blend of history, nature and vibrant local life. Whether you’re wandering the lantern-lit streets of Hoi An, sailing through the karsts of Ha Long Bay, or savoring street food in bustling Saigon, traveling to Vietnam in 10 days offers a memorable taste of the country’s diversity.

In this guide, you’ll discover the best places to visit, suggested routes and helpful tips to make the most of your time. Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned explorer, this 10 day trip to Vietnam itinerary is designed to highlight the most iconic and meaningful experiences—one unforgettable stop at a time.

The appeal of discovering Vietnam in just 10 days

Vietnam is a land of contrasts—where bustling cities meet peaceful countryside, ancient temples coexist with modern skylines and every region offers a different rhythm of life. If you only have a limited time, Vietnam in 10 days strikes the perfect balance. It’s long enough to travel across the country from north to south and short enough to keep your itinerary exciting and efficient.

In just ten days, you can experience the full breadth of Vietnam’s beauty: discover historical landmarks, explore natural wonders, sample world-renowned street food and connect with local cultures. This makes a 10-day journey ideal for both first-time visitors and return travelers eager to see more.

Best time to plan a trip to Vietnam

Vietnam’s long, narrow geography means the weather varies significantly from north to south. Choosing the right time to go can make your 10-day itinerary more enjoyable, whether you’re exploring ancient cities, relaxing on beaches, or cruising through scenic landscapes.

  • In the North (Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Ha Long Bay), October to April offers cool, pleasant weather—ideal for sightseeing.
  • In the Central region (Hue, Da Nang, Hoi An), February to August is best for beach days and exploring heritage sites.
  • In the South (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta), November to April brings warm, dry days perfect for outdoor activities.

For the best overall experience during your Vietnam itinerary 10 days, plan your trip between October to April—a time when all three regions generally enjoy good weather.

How to get to and travel around Vietnam

Vietnam is a well-connected destination in Southeast Asia, making both international arrival and domestic travel fairly easy. Whether you’re flying in from abroad or planning how to move between cities, this section will help you navigate your options with ease.

Getting to Vietnam

Most travelers arrive by air through one of the country’s three main international gateways:

  • Noi Bai International Airport (Hanoi) in the north.
  • Da Nang International Airport in central Vietnam.
  • Tan Son Nhat International Airport (Ho Chi Minh City) in the south.

These airports receive frequent direct flights from major cities in Asia (Bangkok, Singapore, Seoul, Tokyo), Europe (Paris, Frankfurt, London) and Australia. Vietnam also offers an e-visa system for citizens of over 80 countries and visa exemptions for several others, making entry convenient.

Getting around Vietnam

With a well-developed transport network, getting around Vietnam—even on a tight 10-day schedule—is efficient and affordable. Here’s a breakdown of the most popular options:

  • Domestic flights: Best for covering long distances quickly. Ideal for routes like Hanoi to Hue, or Da Nang to Ho Chi Minh City. Carriers include Vietnam Airlines, VietJet Air and Bamboo Airways.
  • Trains: The North–South Reunification Express connects Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City with scenic coastal views. Great for experiencing Vietnam at a slower pace.
  • Sleeper buses and limousines: Comfortable and budget-friendly for mid-range distances such as Hanoi to Ninh Binh or Hue to Hoi An.
  • Taxis and ride-hailing apps: In cities, Grab is widely used for cars and motorbikes. Taxis are available but should be metered or booked through reputable companies.
  • Motorbike rentals: Popular among adventurous travelers for exploring places like Da Lat, Ha Giang, or Phong Nha. A valid license and safety awareness are essential.

Choosing the right combination of these options ensures a smooth and flexible journey throughout Vietnam, helping you make the most of every destination on your itinerary.

Best places to visit in Vietnam in 10 days

Whether you start your journey in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, the following destinations are essential to experience the true spirit of Vietnam. From historical landmarks to scenic wonders, these are the best places to visit in Vietnam during a 10-day itinerary.

Hanoi – Cultural charm in the capital

Your journey begins in the capital, Hanoi, where time seems to slow down amid colonial architecture, tree-lined boulevards and serene lakes. The Old Quarter pulses with energy: scooters weave through narrow alleys, street vendors serve up steaming bowls of pho and ancient temples like Ngoc Son invite peaceful reflection. Don’t miss a traditional water puppet show or a stroll around Hoan Kiem Lake at sunset.

Ha Long Bay – World heritage seascape

From Hanoi, a few hours’ drive brings you to the UNESCO-listed Ha Long Bay—one of Vietnam’s most iconic natural wonders. Cruise among thousands of limestone karsts rising from emerald waters, explore hidden caves, kayak through lagoons, or simply relax on the deck of a traditional junk boat. Spending a night onboard lets you experience the bay at its most tranquil.

Ninh Binh – Tranquil landscapes and rural charm

Often called “Ha Long Bay on land,” Ninh Binh offers a peaceful escape into nature. Glide through serene waterways in Tam Coc or Trang An, surrounded by limestone karsts and lush rice paddies. Visit ancient temples like Hoa Lu to glimpse into Vietnam’s early dynasties and enjoy the laid-back countryside atmosphere.

Hue – Imperial grandeur and cultural depth

As Vietnam’s former imperial capital, Hue is a dream for history lovers. Explore the majestic Imperial Citadel, stroll along the Perfume River, and visit the royal tombs and iconic Thien Mu Pagoda. The city also delights with its refined cuisine—don’t miss a bowl of flavorful bún bò Huế.

Hoi An – Ancient town of lanterns

Charming, atmospheric and endlessly photogenic, Hoi An is a highlight of any Vietnam trip. Wander through lantern-lit streets, shop for tailor-made clothes, take a cooking class, or cycle to the nearby An Bang beach. The blend of Chinese, Japanese and French influences makes Hoi An a cultural treasure.

Da Nang – Beaches and bridges

If time allows, stop in Da Nang—a modern coastal city known for its long sandy beaches and iconic bridges. Visit Marble Mountains, relax on My Khe Beach, or ride the cable car to Ba Na Hills for the famous Golden Bridge held up by giant hands.

Fast-paced and energetic, Ho Chi Minh City offers a different vibe altogether. Dive into the chaos of Ben Thanh Market, learn about Vietnam’s past at the War Remnants Museum and visit the historic Reunification Palace. Tips to plan a 10 day trip to Vietnam

Planning ahead will help you make the most of your limited time in Vietnam. From transportation to packing and useful tools, here are practical tips to ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey.

  • Getting around: For longer distances such as Hanoi to Da Nang or Ho Chi Minh City, opt for domestic flights with Vietnam Airlines or Vietjet to save time. Trains and buses are suitable for short or scenic legs, but keep in mind that travel times can be slower.
  • Travel light: Vietnam’s climate varies by region, so packing layers is key—especially if you’re heading from cool highlands to tropical beaches. Essentials include sunscreen, insect repellent, a rain jacket and sturdy walking shoes for daily exploration.
  • Book in advance: Popular experiences like Ha Long Bay cruises, internal flights and hotels in major cities can fill up quickly, especially during high season. Secure your spots early to avoid missing out or paying premium last-minute prices.
  • Use apps: Navigation and communication are easier with the right tools. Google Maps is great for getting around, Grab is reliable for ride-hailing and Google Translate can help you bridge language gaps with locals.

Vietnam is a destination that blends natural beauty, rich history and vibrant culture—all within reach on a 10-day itinerary. From north to south, each region offers something unique, whether it’s cruising through Ha Long Bay, wandering ancient streets in Hoi An, or soaking in the energy of Ho Chi Minh City. With thoughtful planning, your journey can be both enriching and relaxing.

We just had a northern Vietnam tour with Hanoi Voyages, touring Van Ho, Pu Luong, Ninh Binh, we had a superb time. Sophie c/o with Hanoi Voyages was so helpful, gave us so many valuable advice and make sure everything goes smoothly from the beginning of the planning till we return to our home country. The driver Mr Dong, the guide Mr Quach Tan (also guide from minority village) are amazing. We cant wait to visit Vietnam again with them.

I wanted to travel to Halong Bay, Vietnam and the major attractions in Thailand and looked to find a competent travel agency to plan and execute the trip. Hanoi voyages was what my top choice from my research. End to end they customized my trip based on my unique requirements and helped with travel, tourist guides and accommodations. The hotels were really good in each of the four cities I stayed in and the guides took care of me extremely well. The trip went off without a glitch, thanks to Hanoi voyages. I would strongly recommend them for anyone from the US traveling to Vietnam and Thailand.
