Savor the subtly fragrant Laotian cuisine
Laotian cuisine offers significant regional variations depending on the fresh ingredients available in a particular area. The French have also left their mark, especially in the capital, Vientiane.
Laotian cuisine may not have international gastronomic renown. However, it possesses numerous characteristics and specialties that make it relatively varied and original. It distinguishes itself from the cuisines of neighboring countries, firstly, by its lack of influence from Chinese cuisine, and secondly, by the abundance and variety of aromatic herbs used. Another characteristic is that it uses only coconut oil as a cooking fat.
Herbs in Laotian cuisine
The herbs, without which a Laotian dish loses all its personality, are very diverse: chives, coriander, mints, certain vines and leaves of wild shrubs, etc.
Since Laos is made up of 68 different ethnic groups, each with its own way of cooking and its own recipes, we do not claim to present all Laotian dishes.
You will experience unforgettable moments by witnessing the procession of barefoot monks who, in silence and dressed in their saffron robes, walk through the city streets to collect their food.
Some specialties to try during your trip to Laos
Laotians generally eat earlier than Europeans. Lunch is at 11:30 am and dinner at 5:00/5:30 pm. Restaurants often close quite early, so don’t be caught out!
As in other Southeast Asian countries, Laotians eat a breakfast that resembles lunch or dinner, consisting of sticky rice and sometimes meat. Occasionally, this is replaced by pho soup or khao tchi pate (a Laos pate sandwich with cucumbers and herbs).
Khao Niao

Sticky rice, steamed and served in bamboo or woven rattan baskets. It’s usually taken in one hand and formed into a ball to mop up sauces; in France, it’s used as a bread substitute.
Laap

Salad with beef, pork, or fish, seasoned with lemon, spices, and chili. This dish is 100% typical of Laos and accompanies all festive meals in the country.
Tam Mak Houng

Green papaya salad (very famous in Lao cuisine). It’s a staple in Laotian cuisine, but for those with sensitive palates it might not be the best dish because the papaya is cut into small pieces and marinated in chili and garlic.
Mok Pa

It resembles Cambodian Amok (fish or chicken in coconut milk and spices, all served on a banana leaf), and it is usually served with rice.
Khao Poun
Rice noodles served with coconut milk, soy sauce and aromatic herbs such as lemongrass.
Drinks
Since the tap water isn’t potable, you’ll find bottled drinking water in all restaurants. As for ice cubes, be careful! They aren’t always potable, so opt for chilled water rather than ice.
Beer is very widespread in the country, especially the Beerlao brand.
You can also find all kinds of fruit juices such as kiwi, mango, watermelon, etc… And finally lao-lao, which is rice wine in Laos.
“Fruitful” Laos
In Laos, all fruits are seasonal, but there is never a problem with the choices available.
Pomelo, durian, rambutan, grapes, bananas plums, apples, and dragon fruit are among the top fruits available in this country. In season fruits are usually offered as desserts on a menu.
Laotian cuisine reflects the country’s close connection to nature, tradition, and everyday life. Simple yet deeply flavorful, it celebrates fresh herbs, sticky rice, and bold, balanced tastes shaped by regional influences. Exploring Laotian food is more than a culinary experience – it is a journey into local culture, shared meals, and timeless traditions that reveal the true soul of Laos.
